The South Carolina AHEC Health Careers Summer Institute experience is held at a college, rotating yearly between AHEC Center regions.
Summer Internship Program
Each summer, Lowcountry AHEC's Health Careers Program offers 15-20 paid internships to deserving applicants. Students must be seniors in high school or in college to apply. Through collaborations with many health centers in the region, such as Colleton Medical Center and Summerville Medical Center, Lowcountry AHEC is able to provide placements throughout its 12 county area.
Students apply in the spring for internship slots. The application requires several components. Students must complete the application, provide 2 letters of recommendation, write an essay, and provide a transcript to be considered for placements. Accepted students will work with the health professional of their choice. Students are asked to intern a total of 100 hours, averaging 20 hours per week for five weeks. Applications can be obtained in January for summer slots.
